We had another nice cool and overcast weekend here in the Black Hills. Some areas in the Hills received a little more rain than others but every little bit helps. The forecast looks good for the remainder of the week and into the weekend. Looks like it will be a prefect time to get out and take advantage of the warmer temperatures.
Rapid Creek In Town: The water levels are still lower here in town with Canyon Lake project still going on. Even with the lower flows we are still have good luck all through town. We had good luck on the over cast days this weekend with fishing rising to blue wing olives. Dry fly fishing will continue but will be better later in the afternoon and evenings as the week progresses. Like always nymphing has been the key to our success! Hot flies: Tungsten Rainbow Czechs, Tungsten Jig Soft Spot, Party Crasher Jig Nymph, Zebra Midges, and smaller Blue Wing Olive dries.
Rapid Creek Below Pactola: Fishing in the basin has been a little tricky as of late. The low flows have bunched the fish up a little more. You will have to be a little sneakier as you are approaching the water so you don't spook the fish. Hot Flies: size 20 and 22 Zebra Midges, size 20 and 22 Juju Baetis nymphs, Green Weenies behind a larger weighted nymphs we like the Jig North Fork special and the Jig Baetis nymph, or a scud pattern, BWO Dries and Henryville Specials for the little stone flies.
Spearfish Creek: We went up to the canyon this weekend and did really well nymphing. We didn't see much for rising fish ourselves but had several people this weekend tell us they did well on smaller BWO's and small Stone Flies. Hot Flies: Black North Fork Specials, Jig Baetis pattern, and midge droppers were the most effective patterns.
Castle Creek: Below the dam on castle will be your best chance for dry fly fishing right now. The fishing is better the closer you hike up towards the dam. Good Hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Little Black Stones. Baetis hatches will be better on cloudier days. Stoneflies hatch best on sunny days. Should be good stonefly fishing late in the week. Hot Flies: Dries below the dam we suggest the Henryville Special, the CDC little black stone pattern, and BWO patterns!
