Black Hills Fishing Report 2/19/2013
Rapid Creek
In Town – Fishing in town continues to be very productive, with a few sporadic midge hatches during the warmest part of the day. Nymphing has been very productive, with most of the fish being in the deeper pools and runs. Try Tungsten San Juans, UV Czechs, Bloodworms, and big Tung Teasers for the lead flies, and smaller Bubble Backs, UV Midges, Hot Spots, Two Bit Hookers, small Pheasant Tails, Tungsten Psycho Nymphs, and Zebra Midges for the dropper fly for the best success. Small Streamers have also been producing lots of fish over the past week or so, with small 6-10 Wooly Buggers, Kreelexes, Sculpzillas and Slumpbusters in brown, olive, and black.
Below Pactola – Most of the fish have been caught nymphing over the past few weeks, with bigger nymphs being very productive. Bigger size 8-14 San Juans, UV Czechs, Bloodworms, Vladi’s Czech Nymphs, Jig Nymphs, and Pink Squirrels have been productive fished right on the bottom. Smaller Two Bit Hookers, Bubble Back Midges, Black Beauties, and Tungsten Split Case BWO’s have been producing well as a dropper fly when the fish get a little pickier. A few fish have been periodically rising during the warmest parts of the day, and they can sometimes be persuaded with small Morgan’s Midges, Parachute Adam’s, or F-Flies in size 20-24. Try dragging some streamers in front of the bigger fish as well, patterns like Kraft’s Kreelex and Home Invaders have been especially productive.
Spearfish Creek - The fish are stacked into the deeper pools and runs, with nymphing being the name of the game, both in the canyon and in town. Use a heavy lead fly, like a 8-14 Boat Anchor Scud, UV Czech, Tungsten San Juan, Vladi’s Czech, or Tung Teaser to get your rigs down deep. Dropper flies from 18-22 include, Bubble Backs, Zebra Midges, Two Bit Hookers, Micro Mayfly Nymph, Killer Mayfly Nymph, RS2′s and WD-40′s have been productive. Concentrate on the deep slots, and don’t be afraid to use some weight and get the flies down where the fish are. Small Streamers have also been producing lots of fish over the past week or so, with small 6-10 Wooly Buggers, Kreelexes, Sculpzillas and Slumpbusters in brown, olive, and black.

any reports from sylvan or center lake, also has any one been fishing coxs lake???? just wondering.
Cox was doing well with buggers fished on the drop-off near the dock over the weekend. I tried a big soft hackle in the same spot that did well when it warmed up a bit.
Sylvan and Center still fozen, you can trust we will be out floating around when they thaw, but we have been fishing Cold Springs, only ice on the dam part, nice Bows, bright color, using worms down deep.
i am sounding stupid but where is cold springs.?????
are you fishing through the ice???
Sorry for the wrong name, it’s Cold Brook, down by Hot Springs…got the Brook and Springs words mixed up. It is a lake just north of Hot Springs, a tiny lake, good for float tubing, bass and trout, and as of April 1st, no ice what so ever on it. We were catching trout from shore, not how we normally fish, but hey, it’s fishing and being out in the mice weather, so can’t complain.
is center lake ice free yet
We will have to go run over there to check, I have not been out around here for a couple weeks, Stockade was still ice 2 weeks ago. I want to run up to Sylvan to check, but they have the road closed right now (for several weeks) removing trees, so can’t even go see if that one is ready to fish in. I will leave a note for everyone when I do check the lakes, since they are close to us up here.
