Black Hills Fishing Report for March 8th 2013
Fishing continues to improve week by week. Increases in midge hatches and sporadic hatches of Blue Winged Olives are creating good dry fly fishing. The most consistent fishing continues to be subsurface with nymph and streamer patterns. From 11:00 to 2:00 dry fly fishing opportunities are decent. The best fishing is at lower elevations on Rapid Creek and Spearfish Creek. Look for fishing to improve later in the month at higher elevations as temperatures warm.
The best nymph patterns are small black nymphs like the T. Ready Baetis, Barr's Tung Teaser, Dark Pink Squirrels, and Zebra Midges. San Juan worms and blood midges are also working well. Small woolly buggers and sculp-zilla streamers are also working well. For the rising fish, Griffiths Gnats, Morgan's midges, and small parachutes are your best bets.
