Black Hills Fishing Report - Fall Fishing on Black Hills Trout Streams Fall fishing conditions have been great. Weather has remained warm and it's been worth getting out. Lower water blow Pactola reservoir has made fishing this stretch of Rapid Creek tough, but fishing above the reservoir and through Rapid City has remained quite good. Spearfish Creek in Spearfish Canyon has also been productive. Castle Creek below Deerfield Reservoir is worth the drive. Brown trout continue to spawn. While out and about please be careful of their redds. A little bird told me that water flows will come back up below Pactola Reservoir for several weeks. Fishing should improve below the dam in the near future when higher flows return. Some dry fly fishing opportunities still exist. Mainly blue winged olives in the middle and late afternoon. A few Tricos continue to hatch on Rapid Creek in Rapid City. Instead of the normal morning hatch these tricos are coming off mid to late afternoon. Find a slower stretch and fish to the risers. Other than that, nymphing is the best technique. Use brightly colored flies and attractors like red Copper Johns, jig soft spot nymphs, and dark pink squirrel nymphs. Use a dropper below these flies that looks like a small midge larva or baetis nymph. Streamers are also worth a shot.
